Meadow's hair has a super tight curl. It is just beginning to really grow out from when we had to shave it due to the Not Nice Lice she had a terrible case of upon leaving Ethiopia. Now that it is getting a little bit longer, it is taking a lot more time to manage - it is very tough to comb through no matter how much I condition and wet it. I would love to take her to get it braided, but I'm afraid it is still too short for that.
I was thinking of perhaps trying this to see if it would make it easier to work with.
Has anyone had any experience with these types of products they would be willing to share?

A friend of mine in NM has an African American daughter with super tight curl. She does a relaxer on hers often (I think) and spends hours doing her hair every few weeks to keep it manageable. She said the relaxer helps a ton. Her link to her blog is on mine (The Moore Four) if you wanted to ask her. Her daughter is 7. We're getting there, too. Eme's curl isn't so tight, but everytime she sleeps (including naps) I have to comb through it again. Not sure where to go from here...
NO, no no, don't do it! In the end it ruins the hair. Eventually makes it brittle, weak, causes breakage and loss of hair.
Check out www.keepmecurly.com and google mochamom (can't think of the link off the top of my head). Relaxing is the WORST thing you can do for the health of the hair.
Get some Kinky Curly products... do this: shampoo w/ their shampoo, then slather in the knot today conditioner and leave it in. Get yourself a Denman brush (9 or 10 bucks at Sally's or online), medium 7 rows, and brush through the hair while the conditioner is in and it is wet. Leave the conditioner in. Then small sections of hair at a time work in the Kinky Curly Curling Custard from root to tip, moving through the head of hair section by section. Allow it to air dry. You will have beautiful curls that will stay nice for days at a time. In the morning simply spritz w/ water and if needed apply just a touch of more kinky curly to the areas that need it. NO BRUSHING required for a few days at a time. The shampoo is safe and gentle enough (none of the bad mineral oil or alcohols or other artificial products that are BAD for the hair) to use once and even twice a week. I only use the shampoo once every week and 1/2 to 2 weeks. In between I rinse and condition if I want to start w/ fresh curls.
The products are pricey but last a LONG time. (Like months and months
Oh, and if you don't have a satin sleep cap for her head, get a satin pillowcase. The satin keeps moisture in the hair and allows those curls to last longer. Cotton or flannel pillowcases suck the moisture out and cause lots of hair havoc.
Bereket's hair is EXTREMELY tightly curled and the Kinky Curly is awesome. Once her hair grows longer you can have it braided (or learn yourself; it's not hard!) and she can have that hairstyle for a week. We like to do braided for a week and then curly for a week. We shampoo just before we head into a natural/curly week.
The health of the hair is worth the time and investment. :)
I meant to add after you spritz water on the second day curls, just lightly use your fingers to "brush gently" or shape the hair. Takes like 2 minutes and you're done. Curls good to go until the next morning. Repeat until it's time to wash again or you want to refresh by wetting and re conditioning.
Holly, can you swing by my house one day and perform those step by step instructions so I can watch the master at work? Then, maybe you could move in and do it every day? It will be awesome! Ben and Ellie can come too. We'll be roommates!! Cool!
:)
Thanks for your advice.
I would try what Holly said for sure....
but also, seriously consider braids from a shop, that will last at least 2 months or more!!!! * and they said it will help it grow*
No messing with it at all until the next braiding.( when you feel it's long enough.)
Try to stop by a place (ya right, i know) when you can to get an estimate. all my A A friends with little girls told me to do this and wait on relaxer until they are 11 or 12. Just remember, even with relaxer you still have to comb but also do the curling/straight iron every day if she wants to wear it down and not in a ponytail. :)
