Remind me...

First and second kids do suck their thumbs too, right?
Our only thumb sucker has been Stryder, and now Clover is beginning. It's got me wondering...is it a 4th and 5th baby thing? Is it because they don't get held enough, or have to wait sometimes for me when I am dealing with other children, so they learn to self-soothe? Or, is it just what some little ones do, no matter their birth order? Do babies with the most devoted mothers who immediately attended to each and every single need develop this habit? If possible, I would like to avoid orthodontist-type of thumb sucking problems. Should I start using a pacifier with her because I will be able to take it away later when it's time and I won't be able to cut off her thumb...not without some serious psychiatric treatment and possibly a prison sentence? We've never used pacifiers before. Any insight from you moms out there?

Jayla lost her other front tooth last night. I was teasing her, "I don't know if the tooth fairy can fly in this snow storm we're having. I don't think you're getting P A I D little sister." To which she replies "Mo-om. Dad will still put the money under my pillow no matter what the weather is like." That girl. She is way too smart.

Always in a hurry to give stuff away, she promptly chose a brother on which to bestow one of her dollar bills. She is quite the young philanthropist, coming to the aid of the poor, needy, young Deutsch boys.

I tried pacis with Davis and he would not have any part of them. He is DEDICATED to his thumb!!

I have three teenagers. Soon to be ages 19, 17 and 13. Child #1 used a pacifier and willingly gave it up around the age of 2 or so. Child #2 was a finger sucker. She sucked on the two middle fingers of her left hand. I thought it was kind of nice not having to always search for the pacifier. Plus it was kinda cute, her sucking on those middle two fingers ... We needed orthodontics around the age of 10 or so to break that habbit. Child #3 used a pacifier and with much more effort than child #1 was able to give up the pacifier around age 4. We kind of had to ween him off of it. He was only allowed to have it a nap time and bed time for a while. If you ask me I would push the pacifier rather than the thumb or fingers because as you said, you can always take away the pacifier, there's not much you can do about those fingers. Trust me, I used hot sauce, no bite, and I even wrapped them with tape. Louise (Sandy's Aunt)

my 1st and 3rd suck their thumbs. my 2nd doesn't do anything. NONE Of them would take a pacifier. i TRIED. the thumbs are a HARD habit to break - we're trying with our oldest now and it's very hard...

funny, i just read about 'thumb sucking' from Dr. Sears. His comment was to ''wear them'' (sling your babies) more often.....it is a self soothe response. google it. Otherwise, I know nothing. The girls never sucked anything but me. no paci no fingers. Now, my son.....we'll see....

Ashtyn lost her 2nd front tooth last night also on her 7th birhtday! :)
how cute is that?
