And then he was 8.

As he blew out the candle I made a wish too.

My wish for him and I both is that we survive the next 10 years until he is 18.

Because parenting Flint day after day, week after week, year after year consistently proves the hardest thing I have ever done, hands down.

And I'm sure being parented by me is no walk in the park for him.

It can be really, really hard to lose your mommy and have a replacement take over.

It can be really, really hard to parent a child who has lost his mommy when you are the replacement.

It's funny, while Meadow and I have begun to truly thrive in our relationship and build a wonderfully sweet bond, Flint and I still falter terribly.

He's just a whole different person with an entirely different story, making completely different choices and having drastically different responses while living in the same house with the same terrifically flawed mother.

Happy birthday, boy.
Jayla's party decorations made specifically for Flint.
 A pirate theme.

This is right before he told me that even though the cake I made him didn't look good it still tasted good...

Apparently he has picked up on my inferior cake decorating abilities.

As my daughter would say, whatevs.

Every single one made with love, child. All with love.

I'm not kidding--when I saw the cake (before I got to the bottom of your post) I thought, "I should ask Jayla to make Masyn's birthday cake!" And then to find out that it was you...and that Flint didn't think it looked good...that's funny! I think you did a great job on the cake, and I think you're doing a great job with the boy. One day...hope is a good thing. And positive feedback and results from the other six doesn't hurt, either. :)

Hi there! I am curious about your son's markings on his eyelids. My oldest son has them as well. Feel free to e-mail me at jess.stoll at gmail.com

That cake looks awesome. I might have to copy it - Kaylee would love a giant cupcake cake!

Well, thank y'all so much for the cake validation!! Cake decorating is SOOOOOOOO hard for me to do well!! Yet, I keep trying and every time think I should just buy one for the *next* birthday. When he said that, our other kids said, "NO mom! Your cake looked GREAT!" But still, they are biased. Haha! It's good to hear it from outside sources. ;-) It obviously wasn't quite what Flint had in mind...
